You can never have too much fun. But too much sun is another story. In the last couple of years, there has been more talk about hair damage because of prolonged sun exposure. We know what happens to our skin if we don’t wear sunscreen, but we rarely consider its impact on hair. Here, our own Paul Brown offers tips on keeping our hair healthy throughout the summer:
- Companies are catching on to sunscreen protection for your hair. It’s the buzz this summer. PBH has always understood this and we’ve incorporated Kukui Nut Oil, which is a natural sunscreen, into all our products. Spray it on before you go to the beach. It will also protect hair from saltwater and chlorine. More hair products are coming on the shelves with sun protection. But if you don’t have any on hand.. in a pinch, wrap a pretty scarf around your hair.
- In the summer, it’s also important to seek out moisturizing products or visit a salon for a deep conditioning treatment to keep hair from drying out from sunning and swimming. A deep conditioning treatment will inject moisture into hair, preserving elasticity and curtailing further damage. But sometimes, when the ends of your hair are past the point of no return and no amount of product will bring it back to life, take the quick-fix route, and get your hair cut.
- Chlorine can be damaging to hair. There are deep cleansing shampoos that are ideal if you’re a frequent swimmer. After diving into the pool, use a gentle clarifying shampoo such as Paul Brown Hawaii Clarifying Shampoo. It gently rinses pool chemicals away without stripping hair of shine, a culprit of many clarifying shampoos. Follow with a rich hair conditioner.
- You wouldn’t think it, but when it’s humid, rather than avoiding moisturizing products, you want to add moisture to your hair, such as running your hair with a shine serum before stepping outside. Otherwise, when you venture under the deep blue skies, your hair will suck up the moisture in the air like a sponge, resulting in a frizz attack. That’s a little hair science for you.
